"The land is where our roots are. The children must be taught to feel and live
in harmony with the Earth." - Dr.
Maria Montessori

MMS aims to instill in our students a sense of respect and responsibility for all local and global communities.
In keeping with that vision, we make every attempt to care for the Earth, while teaching our students the importance of stewardship.
Our Director of Sustainability Programming, Katelynn Dillard, leads our efforts in teaching the importance of environmental stewardship from an early age.

Reuse and Recycle: MMS uses real dishes and cloth napkins and towels to decrease the use of paper and plastic products, and orders many food items in bulk to decrease unnecessary waste. MMS Families participate in school recycling pick-up, and the school is also enrolled in a monthly glass recycling program.

Less Toxic Materials: We use less-toxic cleaning products to keep MMS clean and sanitized.

Gardening and Food: Each of our classes plant and maintain our school garden, where we grow native plants, edible herbs, and surplus produce that we donate to local anti-hunger organizations like The Pantry and Oxford Community Market. We compost our food scraps or feed them to Ms. Katelynn's chickens, who have very sophisticated palates. Daily, our amazing Chef Gloria prepares our meals and snacks with whole foods that are seasonal, healthy, and local when possible, with many of our ingredients bought through our friends at Chicory Market and local farms.

Magnolia Montessori School is a 2019 winner of the American Montessori Society's Ursula Thrush Peace Seed Grant.
We will use the grant money to purchase materials for and build new garden beds and a compost bin. The surplus produce grown as a result will be donated to local organizations who support families experiencing hunger.

Outside Time: We believe that time spent outdoors is vital to the growth and development of our students and their relationship to nature. Ms. Katelynn leads regular walks through the woods that line our campus, and has a keen eye for collecting and teaching students about area flora and fauna. All classrooms spend time outside daily except in the most inclement weather.
